How to keep cut flowers fresh in a vase

A bouquet keeps changing after it arrives: buds open, stems move and individual flowers reach their best at different times. Good care helps you enjoy that process. No method gives every variety the same vase life, but a simple routine makes sense for most arrangements.

Start with clean stems and a clean vase

Wash the vase thoroughly before use. Re-cut the stem ends with a clean, sharp tool, avoiding cuts that crush the stems. Remove the leaves that would be submerged, as decaying foliage can spoil the water.

Use fresh water and, when supplied, cut-flower food at the dilution stated on its packet. Flower food is formulated for this purpose; kitchen mixtures and pieces of metal are not a reliable substitute.

Check the water every day

Top up as needed and replace water when it becomes cloudy or dirty. Clean the vase again if deposits develop. Re-cut stem ends when refreshing the arrangement, especially if they have become discoloured, and remove flowers as they fade.

A mixed bouquet will not necessarily age evenly. Moving the remaining stems into a smaller vase can give the arrangement a second shape rather than keeping faded flowers in place.

Choose a comfortable spot

Place the vase somewhere you can enjoy it, away from direct sun, radiators, ovens and drying draughts. Avoid placing cut flowers beside ripening fruit: ethylene can hasten ageing in sensitive flowers.

Different flowers, different habits

  • Tulips can lengthen and lean after cutting. Give them support and check water regularly.
  • Roses need clean water and stem ends that can take it up.
  • Sunflowers need a stable vase for their heavier heads.
  • Mimosa is delicate and benefits from prompt attention rather than being left wrapped and dry.

Water levels and feeding advice can differ by variety. Ask Fiorit if you would like help with a particular flower in your bouquet.
