Fresh flowers: what to do as soon as they arrive
When fresh flowers arrive, it is tempting to leave the wrapped bouquet on the table while you look for a vase. Giving them water promptly is a better start. A few simple steps help the flowers settle after their journey.
If you have brought flowers home
Prepare a clean vase before unwrapping. Re-cut the ends of the stems with a clean, sharp tool, making a neat cut without crushing them. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline, then put the stems into water promptly.
The same principle applies to flowers cut from a garden: a clean cut and access to water matter more than elaborate home remedies.
If a bouquet has been delivered
A florist has already prepared the stems, but the flowers still need attention when they reach you. Remove outer wrapping so the bouquet can sit comfortably in its vase. If the bouquet is tied, the binding may be keeping its shape; there is no need to take the whole design apart.
Use flower food if supplied, following the packet's dilution instructions. If you do not have any, concentrate on a clean vase and regular fresh water rather than adding improvised mixtures.
Choose a vase that supports the flowers
Tall stems need a stable container with enough height to support them. Tulips may continue growing and bending after cutting, so allow room for that movement. Heavy sunflower heads need a vase that will not tip. Different stems can need different water levels: ask if you are unsure about a flower in your bouquet.
What to watch over the next few days
Check the water daily, remove fallen leaves and replace cloudy water. Keep flowers out of direct sun and away from radiators, strong draughts and ripening fruit. If a stem begins to droop, refresh the water and re-cut its end. Not every flower will recover, and vase life varies with species and room conditions.

Frequently asked questions
Should I leave the bouquet in its wrapping?
Remove the outer wrapping and arrange it in water promptly. A tied bouquet can usually keep its binding to preserve the arrangement.
Does every flower need the same amount of water?
No. Use advice specific to your stems, and check the level every day.
