Sunflowers: meaning, summer colour and care

A sunflower changes the character of a room. Its broad flower head and strong stem bring a generous, informal kind of colour: a good choice when you want a gift to feel warm and direct.

Do sunflowers always follow the sun?

Young, developing sunflowers can track the sun as they grow. Mature flower heads generally settle facing east. A cut sunflower in a vase does not turn from morning to evening in the same way as a growing plant.

A flower made of many flowers

What looks like a single bloom is a flower head made up of many small flowers. The centre often displays intersecting spirals, a striking example of patterns in plant growth. It is an interesting detail to look at closely, rather than a reason to expect identical mathematics in every head.

What does a sunflower mean?

Sunflowers are often associated with warmth, admiration and good wishes. Their colour can suit a birthday, a thank-you or an encouraging gesture. Meanings are associations, not rules: the recipient's taste matters more than a fixed floral code.

The story of Clytie turning towards the sun is often linked with sunflowers in later imagery. That association is poetic; it should not be confused with a botanical account of this American plant in the ancient Mediterranean.

Helping sunflowers last in a vase

• Choose a stable vase that supports the weight of the heads.
• Use clean water and remove any leaves below the waterline.
• Re-cut stem ends with a clean, sharp tool before arranging.
• Check the water daily and replace it when necessary.
• Keep the arrangement away from direct sun, heaters and ripening fruit.

How long they last depends on freshness, temperature and care. If one stem droops, check the water and re-cut the end; recovery is possible but cannot be guaranteed.
