St John's Water and Florence's midsummer traditions
On 24 June, Florence celebrates St John the Baptist, its patron saint. Around the same time, an older midsummer custom brings flowers and herbs into a bowl of water: acqua di San Giovanni, or St John's Water.
A custom on the night of 23 June
In different parts of Italy, flowers and aromatic herbs are traditionally gathered and left in water outdoors overnight. The water is associated with the dew of St John's night and used in a symbolic morning washing ritual. Ingredients and details vary from family to family and place to place.
Roses, lavender, rosemary and mint appear in accounts of the tradition. The important point is its cultural meaning: renewal, good wishes and a connection with the passing seasons. Stories about luck or protection belong to folklore, rather than evidence of particular benefits.
Why this time of year?
The feast falls near the summer solstice, when long days and flowering plants make midsummer especially visible. The solstice and 24 June are not the same calendar event, even though their imagery often overlaps in popular traditions.
St John in Florence
The city's relationship with its patron connects religious history, public celebrations and local identity. Fireworks and historic festivities are familiar parts of that association, but programmes and access arrangements should be checked for the year of your visit.
Flowers offer a quieter way to mark the season: a summer arrangement at home, a gift for a host or a gesture for someone named Giovanni or Giovanna.
