Mimosa: yellow flowers and Women's Day in Italy
Bright yellow mimosa is one of the most recognisable sights of late winter in Italy. Its soft-looking flower heads and distinctive fragrance bring colour before many spring flowers have reached their peak.
What flower do Italians call mimosa?
The flowering branches commonly sold as mimosa include Acacia dealbata, also called silver wattle. The Royal Horticultural Society identifies its origin as Australia and Tasmania. It has become familiar in Mediterranean landscapes, but that does not make it native to Italy.
It should not be confused with the sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica, whose leaves fold when touched. The common name can obscure the difference between these plants.
Why is mimosa linked with 8 March?
In Italy, yellow mimosa branches are strongly associated with International Women's Day on 8 March. The tradition took hold in the post-war period, with a seasonal flower that could serve as an accessible, recognisable symbol.
The meaning of the gift depends on the gesture behind it: recognition, solidarity, affection or thanks. A personal message can give that meaning more clearly than an elaborate arrangement.
How to look after cut mimosa
Mimosa is delicate. Put the branches in clean water promptly, re-cut the stem ends with a clean, sharp tool and remove foliage that would be submerged. Keep the vase away from direct heat, strong draughts and ripening fruit.
Do not expect every bunch to last for a fixed number of days. Stage of flowering, handling and room conditions make a difference. Ask for specific care advice if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions
Is florist's mimosa the plant with touch-sensitive leaves?
No. The yellow flowering acacia branches commonly used by florists are different from Mimosa pudica.
Can I always order mimosa on 8 March?
Check availability and the delivery calendar first. A celebration date does not automatically mean delivery is available that day.
